I was just referring to their poor business model, which manifests itself in a few ways. There's user base's general dissatisfaction with the implementation and enforcement of handling adult content. After years of having adult content, imgur came out and said they were outright banning it last year, a decision the community hated. After several poor attempts to change their approach to nsfw, they have currently settled on, 'nsfw is allowed but reported images will be removed with almost no human oversight'. Some members of the community have apparently made it their goal in life to report nsfw content, and it's just a mess.Between compression and image takedowns/moderation, imgur is definitively a social network first, and a general purpose image host last. I don't care much for the way they handle moderation, or the user base itself for that matter. There's also their awful video implementation, GIFV.
'Hey, instead of using one of the two existing great standards, we made our own crappy thing! Now, instead of being able to share common formats like webm or mp4, you have to upload a 200MB nonstandard bastardization of GIF (which does not exist in the wild, so you have to find a special program to make this special kind of GIF) and we'll convert that for you!' Between compressing regular images and enforcing that all video must be lossily transcoded TWICE (between two bad formats which give you little control over quality), imgur is ensuring the perpetual circulation of compressed, low quality content.
Every time something gets reposted, it dies a little more. The ironic thing is that their attempt to save storage space via compression has likely backfired in a huge way; imgur mostly is used to rehost popular internet content (like webcomics for example). The same thing will be uploaded 1000 times, and instead of having just one copy of the original image, there's 1000 different compressed copies taking up space.Tl;dr they are a terrible service for image hosting.
